The Importance of Moving During Self Isolation

Staying physically active might be one of the best things we can do for ourselves during this time of self isolation. Not because it’s time to get rock solid abs or anything (if you are, props to you), but it’s a great time to start taking care of our bodies--both mentally and physically.

Now more than ever, we are spending more time in our homes sitting and less time getting out. However, this may be the easiest it’s ever been for you to get active. Maybe you have more time than ever before without all of the time you typically spent on commuting? Or maybe you now have the opportunity to get out of that office you’re usually cooped up in and take more time out of your day for a walk around the block.

Whatever it may be, take time to move today. 

Endorphins make you happy.

Endorphins are chemicals produced by the body to relieve stress and pain. They aid in alleviating depression, reducing stress and anxiety, boosting our self esteem, and so much more. So how does our body naturally release endorphins? Exercising is one of the main ways our body can release endorphins. Have you ever gone for a workout, when you really didn’t feel like it, and then felt a boost of energy and happiness once you got finished? You have endorphins to thank for that! So whether you’re feeling down, lonely, anxious, or maybe just bored today, go move your body. Your body will thank you! 

Ways to move 

But you don’t have to run 3-miles to release endorphins. Moving comes in all different forms. You can dance, stretch, walk, volunteer, create art, bike, garden, etc. Even if you don’t feel like you have time to move, you do. Try standing up while working at your desk. Go for a walk during your meetings over the phone. Doing this not only promotes moving and physical health but also increases productivity throughout your day.

Gyms like Lifetime, Orange Theory, and Corepower Yoga are putting out online free classes for anyone to enjoy. Utilize this resource and this extra time you may have. Find new ways to move your body and find rest. 

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”
